ABOUT TEGAN AND SARA

Canadian indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara is formed of identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin. Both singers, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists, the sisters began writing songs together at 15, when they found their step-dad’s guitar in the basement.

CAREER

1995-2002: Beginnings and early recordings

In the mid-1990s, Sara began writing a song called "Tegan Didn’t Go to School Today," which Tegan then helped write. They recorded the song together under the name Plunk (standing for ‘light punk’) and in 1997, they used their school's recording studio to record two demo albums: Who's in Your Band? and Play Day. The following year, they entered and won Calgary's Garage Warz competition and with their winnings they paid for studio time, recording their first professional demo under the name Sara and Tegan. The demo was titled Yellow Tape and it was followed by Orange Tape and Red Tape. In May 1998, the duo opened for Hayden in Calgary.

Their independent debut album, Under Feet Like Ours, was released in April 1999, under the name Sara and Tegan. The album was produced by Jared Kempner and featured two songs from the Red Tape and two songs from the Orange Tape. Not long after the album’s release, they changed their act’s name to Tegan and Sara, as there had been the impression that they were a solo act named ‘Sara Antegan’. Their first album was later reprinted under the name Tegan and Sara. On the strength of their debut album, they were signed to Neil Young’s label, Vapour Records. In 2000, they released their first album on the label, This Business of Art, and began touring extensively to promote the album.

2002-2011: Mainstream success

In 2002, Tegan and Sara released their third album, If It Was You, which was followed by So Jealous in 2004. The track "Walking with a Ghost" from So Jealous was covered by the White Stripes on their Walking with a Ghost EP, which led to heightened interest in the duo. The Con, the sisters’ 2007 album, features appearances from  Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie, Matt Sharp of the Rentals (and previously Weezer), Hunter Burgan of AFI, and Kaki King. The album was their first to chart on the Billboard 200 at number 34, and it also reached number 11 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart.

ON, IN, AT, a collection of stories, essays, journals, and photos of the band on tour in America in late 2008, writing together in New Orleans, and touring Australia, was released in 2009. That October, the sisters released Sainthood, their sixth album. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number 21 and reached number seven on the Alternative Albums chart. It was also critically acclaimed, receiving four out of five stars from Spin magazine.

On November 15, 2011, Tegan and Sara released a live CD/DVD combination package titled Get Along featuring three films: "States", "India", and "For the Most Part". Get Along was nominated for the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.

2012-2018: Heartthrob, Love You to Death, and The Con X: Covers

On September 25, 2012, Tegan and Sara released "Closer", the first single from their upcoming eighth studio album. The album, Heartthrob, was released in January 2013 and is their highest charting album to date, reaching number three on the Billboard 200. It also debuted at number two on the Canadian Albums chart and Digital Downloads chart and hit number one on the rock and alternative album charts. The album was shortlisted for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize in July 2013 and in March 2014, it won Tegan and Sara three Juno Awards: Single of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, and Group of the Year.

"Boyfriend", the lead single from their follow-up, was released on April 8, 2016. The duo released a music video for each track on the album, Love You to Death, which was released on June 3, 2016.

In 2017, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of their album The Con, Tegan and Sara collaborated with 17 artists, including Cyndi Lauper, to create The Con X: Covers. Proceeds from the album went to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which fights for "economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women".

2019-2021: Hey, I’m Just Like You, memoir, and TV show

Tegan and Sara’s memoir, High School, was published on September 24, 2019. Their next record, Hey, I’m Just Like You, was released three days after the book and consists of 12 songs that the sisters had initially written as teenagers.

From April through July 2020, they ran a weekly concert series on Instagram Live, called Where Does the Good Grow, to entertain their fan through the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021 it was announced that a TV show based on the book High School would be filmed in Calgary with Clea Duvall as the director.

2022-present: Still Jealous, new record label, and Crybaby

Still Jealous, a completely acoustic reimagining of their 2004 album So Jealous, was released on February 11, 2022. The following month, the duo announced they had left Warner Bros. Records and signed a new record deal with Mom & Pop.

Crybaby, Tegan and Sara’s first album on the new label, is released in October 2022, preceded by the singles  "Fucking Up What Matters" and "Yellow".
