About Russell Howard

English comedian, television presenter, radio presenter and actor Russell Howard was born on March 20, 1980 in Bristol, England. His family moved to Bedford when he was young, where he attended Bedford Modern School, before relocating to Hampshire, where he studied at Perins School in New Alresford and Alton College. At the age of 18, he returned to Bristol, where he enrolled at the University of the West of England to study economics. Chasing the dream he'd had since the age of 15, Howard began his first forays into stand-up whilst studying there, performing on the Bristol comedy circuit.

Career

TV and radio work

After graduating, Howard moved to London to pursue stand-up comedy as a career. His big break came in 2004 when he was hired by BBC Radio 1 to write, sing and perform on the comedy series The Milk Run. Around this time, he also appeared on the comedy radio shows Banter (hosted by Andrew Collins) and Political Animal on BBC Radio 4, and in 2005 he was picked with several other comedians as the best comedy talent from the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Each comedian was given the opportunity to record a 10-15 minute set, performed at the Bloomsbury Theatre and aired on the UK television channel Paramount Comedy 1 the following fall.

Howard co-hosted The Russell Howard Show on BBC 6 Music with fellow comedian Jon Richardson from November 2006 through July 2008. It was around this time that he became a household name in the UK through regularly appearing as a panellist on the BBC comedy television show Mock the Week.

In 2009, the BBC commissioned Russell Howard's Good News: a British comedy and topical news television show hosted by Howard and broadcast on BBC Three and later on BBC Two. The show ran for 10 seasons, from 2009 through 2015, and in 2013 it was voted the Best Ever BBC Three show.

In August 2011, he made his US debut on Conan.

Howard presented a Comedy Central show from 2015 through 2016 called Russell Howard's Stand Up Central, and 2015 also saw perform stand-up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. That December, he also made his acting debut in BBC Two's hour-long comedy-drama that he also co-wrote, called A Gert Lush Christmas.

With his mother Ninette, Howard presented a Comedy Central travel documentary series called Russell Howard & Mum: USA Road Trip, in which they travelled across America.

In September 2017, The Russell Howard Hour, a 14-part weekly comedy series similar to Russell Howard's Good News, premiered on Sky One. The show was renewed for a fourth and fifth season in January 2019.

Live Comedy

"Russell Howard Live", a DVD recording of a show from Howard's 2007 Adventures tour that took place at the Bloomsbury Theatre, was released in November 2008.

His 2008 Dingledodies tour was so popular that it was extended through 2009. Howard sold out three shows at the Hammersmith Apollo as well as several large arenas such as Wembley Arena and Manchester's MEN Arena, selling over 125,000 tickets. The DVD special of the tour was released in November 2009.

Also in 2009, Howard was named "Best Theatre Show" at the Chortle Comedy Awards and performed several UK dates in December for his "Big Rooms and Belly Laughs" tour.

His 2011 Right Here Right Now tour sold out, and the live DVD was released in November that year. Other Russell Howard live tour DVD comedy specials include Wonderbox (2014) and Recalibrate (2017).
